Get Your BirdCottage!

give the birds in your garden what they need most: somewhere safe to feed.

The gardens are getting quieter every year. Wildflower meadows disappearing. Hedgerows ripped out for vinyl fencing. Habitats paved over. And most gardens don't have a single reliable spot where garden birds can feed without competing, getting wet, or giving up.

But that's exactly what's critical right now: birds need reliable food sources during nesting season to feed their chicks. When food is scattered on the ground, wet, or fought over, parent birds burn precious energy and their fledglings suffer.

This cottage-style bird feeder gives them exactly that: a stable, dry, community feeding spot they can trust and return to daily. Designed by Frank Whitcombe (71), an ironworker from Ludlow, Shropshire who has spent over 40 years building everything wild birds need to feed properly.

🐦 why this bird bath is different

Powder-coated steel construction — birds instinctively avoid rusty, peeling surfaces because they harbour bacteria. Frank's feeder uses a powder-coated finish that holds through years of British weather without chipping. Feels solid in your hand. Reads as trustworthy to a bird.

Wide overhanging copper-effect roof — projects well past the feeding tray to keep seed dry through even a proper British downpour. Built-in drainage holes in the base let any water escape immediately. Seed stays fresh for weeks — no more mould, no more waste, no more birds refusing to touch it.

Four perches on separate sides — unlike single-port feeders where birds queue and squabble, this lets multiple birds feed at the same time without competing. Three, four, sometimes five birds at once — which is when the garden actually comes alive. Frank calls it "the bird party" — and once your feeder gets one, you'll understand why.

Arched viewing windows — small transparent panels on each side so you can check the seed level from the kitchen window. No more finding out it's empty when the birds have already stopped visiting. Small design detail. Makes an enormous difference to how often you actually keep it filled.

Lift-off roof for easy cleaning — the whole roof lifts off in seconds. Wipe out, refill, close. Two minutes and you're done. No dismantling, no unscrewing, no mess. That's why Frank's feeders actually stay clean — because the cleaning process doesn't put you off.

⚠️ why this matters right now

More birds die during nesting season than any other time of year — not from predators, but from starvation. Parent birds burn thousands of calories a day feeding their chicks. When reliable food is scarce, the chicks are the first to go.

A single well-designed feeder in your garden can become a lifeline for an entire nesting family. On busy spring mornings, Frank has counted as many as five different bird species feeding on his own cottage feeder at the same time. Robins, blue tits, goldfinches, chaffinches, even the occasional nuthatch. "They come because it works. Everything else out there was designed for the shelf, not the bird."

  • Frank's care tip:

"Hang it somewhere sheltered, near a tree or hedge so the birds have cover if a hawk shows up. Fill it with sunflower hearts or a good mixed seed. Refill it before it runs out completely — birds remember reliable feeders and will visit yours first, all season long."

What Our Customers Are Saying

Rita C.

This is a gorgeous medium-sized bird feeder. It is solid, built very well, and the metal stands on all four sides give a great place for the birds to perch and eat. You can easily tell when the feeder is empty because the windows all along the sides let you watch the birds’ progress. Filling it from the top is a little tricky but totally doable; you fill the feeder by unscrewing the knob at the top. The quality is similar to those I can find locally and the price is about the same. Do try and buy it when it’s on prime day or a sale!

I bought this bird feeder before going on a one-week trip so I could leave plenty of food and water for my two birds. It worked perfectly! When I got back, the food and water hadn’t even reached halfway, so there was still plenty left.

The quality is amazing, it’s sturdy, and it made me feel so much more at ease while I was away. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a reliable feeder, especially if you travel or just want to make sure your birds always have food and water available.

This is a very well made feeder and is completelymade out of metal. My only complaint is that the top has to be unscrewed to fill it but other than that it's perfect. The birds love it!

What are the dimensions and specifications?

The feeder is approximately 30cm tall and 18cm wide. Suitable for hanging at chest height from a tree branch, garden hook, or fence post. Seed capacity approximately 1kg — enough for several days of feeding depending on the number of visitors.

What kind of seed should I use?

Frank recommends sunflower hearts for the widest range of British garden birds. A quality mixed seed also works well. Avoid cheap bulk seed with a lot of wheat filler — birds discard it and it goes to waste.

Will it attract the birds I want to see?

Ideally 1.5 to 2 metres off the ground, near natural cover like a hedge or tree so birds can retreat quickly if a predator appears. Avoid open lawn or exposed positions — birds won't feel safe enough to feed.

Where should I hang it?

Ideally 1.5 to 2 metres off the ground, near natural cover like a hedge or tree so birds can retreat quickly if a predator appears. Avoid open lawn or exposed positions — birds won't feel safe enough to feed.

How do I clean it?

Lift the roof off, wipe the interior with warm soapy water, rinse, dry, and refill. Frank recommends cleaning every 2-3 weeks during heavy use to prevent seed build-up and mould.

What an adorable bird feeder! It is appropriate for smaller birds. The foot bars can fold up or down. I have not had any squirrels stealing from it the week it has been up. Because it is metal it will stand up longer than others.

Very easy to clean and holds a lot of food. It is very sturdy. Birds seem to love it and it was extremely easy to assemble. It has been raining and the food inside the house is still dry.

This review is for a square bird feeder. It is made from a lightweight metal so it is nice quality and will last a long time through many outdoor elements since it’s waterproof and rain resistant. It has a metal ring hook to hang it from any post or tree. It is nice neutral colors of green and brown so it will look nice in any outdoor setting. It’s about 12” tall and 5” around so it will provide ample space for birds to feed as well as hold a decent amount of bird seed. It has small holes at the bottom of the pirch area so the seed doesn’t rot, which I’ve had issues with other feeders, but not this one. I love the stylish design of the windows as well!

Fits in well in my garden. Wish I could have ordered when most of the birds were still here but it’s already snowing here. I have to research what birds actually stick around here in the winter and get the proper food because the kind I have now wont work. BUT regardless of it having the food yet it looks so gorgeous in my yard I could just cry. If you live in the city you’ll understand what it’s like to have a small plot of nature to escape to and this feeder fits my cottagecore vine just right. Also should mention this feeder is built very well and the mechanics to take it apart are top notch. The metal Is incredibly sturdy and each piece is painted neatly and beautifully

This bird feeder turned out to be exactly what I needed. The metal build feels solid in my hands and gives me confidence that it will hold up through rough weather. It is simple to fill by removing the roof, and being able to take it apart for cleaning is a nice bonus. The hanging ring on top is strong, so I do not worry about it falling when it is full. The birds took to it quickly. Black capped Chickadees were the first to show up, and they visit it constantly. I also get a steady mix of other backyard birds throughout the day. The little house design is cute without being flimsy, and it looks great outside my window. It is not a large feeder, so depending on how busy your feeders usually are, you might find yourself refilling it more often. Overall, I am really happy with this feeder. It looks nice, is adorable, and fits perfectly in my setup.

The little house design is cute without being flimsy, and it looks great outside my window. It is not a large feeder, so depending on how busy your feeders usually are, you might find yourself refilling it more often. Overall, I am really happy with this feeder. It looks nice, is adorable, and fits perfectly in my setup.
